Most of us don’t know that today we live in a highly toxic environment. We are regularly getting exposed to foods loaded with chemicals. If you think you can avoid toxicity entirely, it is almost impossible to do so. So our liver and digestive system could easily get overpowered. Our body is made in a way that it removes toxins in a natural and continuous manner.
There are 2 groups of toxins:
- Water soluble
- Fat soluble
The water soluble toxins are removed readily through our kidneys and blood.
But the fat soluble toxins are difficult to be removed. As already mentioned, our body is made to eliminate toxins regularly and naturally.
So which are these fat soluble toxins?
- Heavy metals
- Food additives
- Various environmental compounds
They can be removed entirely by our body only when they become water soluble.
Our liver plays an important role here. Even when our detoxifying pathways and digestive system are working well, it’s a challenge. These fat soluble toxins are able to reach our blood, brain and fat cells via our liver and they can get stored there for a long time.
But researchers believe that balanced digestion, detox pathways and stress levels can be regulated to prevent the storing of such harmful compounds and toxins in our body.
Whenever we digest our meal, the two types of fats – toxic and nutritional are mixed up from the stomach to the small intestine. The bile from our liver and gallbladder will then emulsify them in the small intestine. Our small intestine has millions of tiny villi and lacteals (finger-like mucus membranes that resemble grass).
They will help in sweeping our gut. They also help with absorbing nutritional fats. On the other hand, they will move the toxic fats to our liver so as to process them.
Whenever there is any damage to this detox pathway, our body will not be able to eliminate toxic fats. It will simply store them.
The initial part of our lymphatic system is known as the Gut Associated Lymphatic Tissue or GALT. It is what surrounds our intestinal tract. This is where lacteals cause the absorption and processing of both toxic and nutritional fats.
At this place (a quarter of an inch within the gut wall), it is crucial to have the villi and lacteals to be working properly. It is also important that the quarter inch of the outer area of the gut (which forms the lymph tissue) should not have any congestions.
The lymphatic system surrounding the gut then takes the absorbed fats to our liver. The liver uses the good fats for making:
- Cell membranes
- Brain cells
Once processed, our liver will mark them for removal.
If there is congestion in the lymphatic system, there is severe impact on the process of usage of good fats and removal of bad fats.
These are the symptoms that show that there is congested GALT which is harming the lymphatic system:
- Additional weight around the belly
- Stiffness in the joints
- Swelling in breast; breast tenderness in menstrual cycle
- Skin irritation/itching
- Elimination problems
- Swelling in hands/feet
- Irregular headaches
Our intestinal villi (the grass-resembling mucus membranes) could get damaged due to many reasons like stress and poor diet. This can affect the functioning of our bowels.
Our intestinal villi could even become dry if there is too much stress. It may also cause irregular constipation.
If you have been suffering from constipation for a long time, it can cause drying of the villi. This could also result in production of reactive mucus.
When there is too much mucus, your stools can seem to be normal (1 to 3 normal bowel movements daily), yet you may be bloated, have additional belly weight and feel unhealthy.
If there is too much of mucus, you can have more frequent bowel movements, and the stools can become loose and look like diarrhea. If you find mucus in the stool, make sure to get immediate medical attention. It is a sign that villi is suffering from excess congestion due to too much mucus.
If this happens, the process of toxin break down will be adversely affected due to:
- Delivery of good fats
- Removal of toxic fats
- Regular immune response
- Intestinal skin health
Usually, the toxins absorbed within the lymph are neutralized by white blood cells (that boost our immunity) in more than 500 lymph nodes within the lymphatic system.
But if there is excess mucus, this process may get hampered and the toxins are moved back into our liver.
The key to preventing toxins from moving back to our liver is to maintain a balance of the mucus membranes. You should ensure that they don’t become too wet or too dry. There are other factors too that could affect them. This includes:
- Soft drinks
- Processed foods
- Food additives
Maintenance of proper health also requires ideal flow of bile from our liver. It is the bile that helps in digesting fats. It also works as an effective immune system responder within our digestive tract.
Bile can break down even parasites, bad bacteria, chemicals, pesticides, and heavy metals that could be harmful to our body. If there is too much fiber in your diet, the large amount of bile will be removed through stool.
But if there is deficiency in fiber, almost 94 percent of the bile will be reabsorbed by the liver for recycling. This will also include toxins. In such a situation, our liver becomes overpowered because it doesn’t expect toxic fat cells to return to it.
This can cause congestion in the liver over the long term. Our bile can become very thick and sludge-like. This makes it harder for the bile to break down fat-soluble toxins because it will not be able to ward off the acids from stomach that enter our small intestine.
These acids cause irritation of the villi and this will trigger more production of mucus that can cause reactions and congestions. It can also hamper pancreatic enzymes flow into our small intestine. The common bile duct is shared by the pancreas along with the gallbladder. So this can affect the entire digestive process.
When there is congestion within the biliary tubes in our liver (because of toxins and sludgy bile), our liver will push the fat-soluble toxins into our blood stream. The toxins will then reach the fat cells and get stored for years. This leads them to degenerating and oxidation (damage due to free radicals).
These toxins can then harm any part of our body – even the brain. There is a good chance that these toxins can transform into neurotoxins and get stored in the fatty tissues in our brain. This can cause cognitive problems and many other health imbalances.
Remove Fat for Getting Rid of Toxins
When it comes to Ayurveda, the focus is on getting the body to burn fat rather than on weight loss. The fat metabolism in our body works as its detoxification fuel. It is important for flushing out fat cells for further removing toxins.
When our nervous system is able to run without any stress, our body will be able to burn fat in a natural way.
So you may be able to burn additional fat in many ways, but it is more important to bring significant changes in your lifestyle. You should understand that the overall well being of your digestive system, bile flow and lymph are crucial in the detoxification and fat-burn process.
Food Allergies & Good Fat Absorption Problems
Many times it is not possible for you to absorb good fats after breaking them down because your lymph and villi in the gut have been congested. This is why lots of people are diagnosed with allergies to soy, dairy and wheat. One reason is that such foods are too heavy. They are difficult to digest and require high amount of mucus.
They can contain gluten that causes irritation of the intestinal walls. This can stimulate release of additional reactive mucus even when there is too much mucus in your gut and the stomach and upper small intestine didn’t break down the gluten effectively.
Therefore, it could adversely affect the capability of the intestinal wall to work as a health barrier for our body. You can avoid these foods for some time but it is not possible to remove dairy products and wheat forever.
What Do you Conclude?
If you notice loose stools or there is regular constipation, and there is mucus in the bowel, it could be a sign that your detox and assimilation pathways have some problems. This will require avoiding some foods and including other foods for proper elimination.
When you feel that heavy foods or foods with high amount of fat are just sitting in your stomach or if you notice pain after your meals or become nauseous, these could be symptoms of problems with bile flow and that there is storage of toxic fats.
So you must follow some rules for helping your body in fighting such effects.
According to Ayurveda, you should take steps to maintain the proper health of your intestinal tract’s skin, break the stagnation of bile and liver, and flush your lymph, if you face such issues.
You will find many methods for supporting your body in the cleansing of toxins and hazardous compounds you are regularly getting exposure to.
Some foods are highly effective in cleansing the liver and restoring its functioning. They include:
- Green tea
- Green leafy veggies
- Olive oil
- Cruciferous vegetables
- Alternative grains
Here is one of the best methods for cleansing your liver and bile.
Liver/Gall Bladder Cleansing Remedy
Get the following ingredients:
- Lemon – 3 (you could just use a single large grapefruit too)
- Epsom salt – 4 tbsp
- Virgin olive oil – half cup
- Apple juice (you may also use malic acid supplements)
Apple juice is optional for you to use.
How to Prepare?
You should take as many apples for 4 to 5 days before starting this cleansing treatment (you may also drink apple juice). You may also use malic acid supplements.
During the last two days, take 8 ounces of apple juice every 2 to 3 hours. This will help in making your cleansing process a success.
During the 1st day of the treatment, start with a light breakfast without any fats. This will help in the accumulation of bile in the liver, creating pressure. It will help in removing stones from the liver.
- Mix 4 tbsp of Epsom salts in three cups of water in a jar at 2 pm. Keep it in the refrigerator. Avoid taking anything after 2 pm.
- In the evening (6 pm) take three-fourth cup of the mixture from the jar. You may find the taste to be a little disagreeable. Add 1/8 tbsp of powdered vitamin C for flavor.
- Again take three-fourths of the mixture at 8 pm. Complete all your chores and rest for the rest of the time for the liver flush.
- Then at 15 minutes to 10 pm, take a jar and add half cup of the virgin olive oil into it. Take the grapefruit and squeeze the juice into the jar. Use a fork to remove the pulp. This will give you half to three-fourths juice to mix with the olive oil. Close the lid and shake well.
- Drink it at 10 pm within 5 minutes.
Lie down on your right side. The right knee should be kept up pointing to your chin for around 20-25 minutes. Avoid any movement and you can go to sleep.
When you wake up in the morning, take three-fourth cup of Epsom salt dosage and again go to sleep.
The remaining salts should be taken 2 hours later. Wait for another 2 hours before you take anything (avoid solid fruits yet). You should take only fluids and then gradually move to fruits.
This is a highly effective toxin cleansing, detox process. You are the one who is responsible to your health. Make sure to keep an eye on the symptoms and take action whenever needed!
