Homemade Natural Bug Repellent

It is a known fact that lemon eucalyptus essential oil repels mosquitoes this gas been proven in several studies conducted.

Other studies into the extracts from the peels of citrus fruit like grapefruits, lemons, tangerines and oranges have shown that they have a strong smell that repels mosquitoes and with no side effects.

The Mosquito Repellent Mason Jar

You can use mason jars to carry the essential oils and citrus fruits that will repel mosquitoes. It is an effective method of repelling mosquitoes and bugs.


  • Mason jar -- 2
  • Sliced lemon -- 1
  • Sliced lime -- 1
  • Lemon eucalyptus essential oil -- 10 drops
  • Citronella essential oil -- 10 drops

Sprigs of rosemary -- 4 (this is optional)


  • Put even quantities of lemon and lime slices into the jars.
  • You can add 2 sprigs of rosemary into each of the jars.
  • Then add water into the jars, let it be about 3/4 full.
  • You then add the essential oils in the jar one after another.
  • You can add more water if necessary.

You can place these jars in your backyard, by campfires and on porches.

Just light the ingredients in the jars and the scent will repel mosquitoes enabling you to have fun outdoors.
