Pineapple belongs to the Bromeliaceae family. There are many varieties of pineapple, but the most famous kind of this genus of plants is Ananas comosus, which is used as food, but it is also a natural remedy for the prevention and treatment of many diseases.
Pineapples tree can grow up to 1 meter in height. The fruits of pineapple are sweet and with aromatic flavor.
Pineapple originated in the Caribbean, not in South America, as previously was thought to be, and discovered Columbus in 1493. The Guadeloupe islanders were first to notice this strange looking fruit. In Europe, pineapple fruit was much more appreciated. It used to be expensive and reserved for the royal court, especially because it could be grown only in countries with tropical climates.
In Africa, Asia and the South Pacific, pineapples were brought by Portuguese and Spanish explorers. Pineapples grow in these regions today. Name of the pineapples comes from the Indian word “anana” which means “excellent fruit.” Pineapple is rightly called the “king of fruits”.
Energy and nutritional value
Pineapple rightly called “the king of fruits.” This exotic fruit contains a royal amount of healthy and beneficial ingredients. Pineapple is rich in enzymes, vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Thus it contains, for example, calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, iodine, zinc, manganese, provitamin A, vitamins E, C (36,2 mg, which is 60% of the recommended daily intake of this vitamin), vitamin group B or biotin, fiber, enzyme -- bromelain…
Energy value of 100 grams of fresh pineapple is 48 kcal / 202 kJ, of which 12% carbohydrates, 0.1% fat and 0.5% protein.
The medicinal properties of pineapple have been known in folk medicine for centuries.
The medicinal ingredients, especially specific bromelain, are a group of enzymes that break down proteins and helps in the digestion of food. If pineapples are eaten immediately after a meal, it helps the stomach to break down proteins to amino acids. Bromelain has strong anti-inflammatory effect.
Clinical trials have confirmed that bromelain from pineapple relieves inflammation and reduces swelling in acute inflammation of the sinuses, throat, helps with arthritis, gout and accelerates healing after operations and injuries. Bromelain is a natural remedy for colds and bronchitis, because it dilutes the secretions in the airways and facilitates its expectoration. Some studies have even shown that some inflammatory, bromelain could be used instead of antibiotic. Due to these properties of pineapples fully utilized, it is recommended that the consumption of pineapple is between meals so the enzymes are used for the process of digestion. Bromelain is located in the loops in the fruit of the pineapple and is activated by heat. Because canned pineapple is a as good source of these enzymes, it is best to be consumed fresh.
Because pineapple is rich in antioxidants, especially vitamin C, it has positive effect on the protection of the body from the damaging effects of free radicals that can cause various diseases such as atherosclerosis, diseases of the heart and blood vessels, bronchitis, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, colon cancer and other types of cancer. Accordingly, pineapples are considered as natural anticancer drug that can help prevent and fight cancer.
Pineapple strengthens natural immunity of the body and keeps health.
Pineapple is not only healthy, but also cosmetic powder wizard, which from the outside and inside nourishes the skin, keeping it moisture, restores, cleans and collects pores. Pineapple has “anti-aging” effect. It has been proven that by eating pineapple you will slow down the aging process of your skin, increasing its elasticity and your skin will look younger, fresher and softer.
Pineapple stimulates metabolism, so it is a successful fighter against cellulite and excess weight.
Pineapple contains magnesium so consume it as often as you can because lack of magnesium can cause hypersensitivity of the nervous system, irritability, nervousness, muscle cramps and impaired work of the heart and digestive system. Magnesium deficiency leads to under-utilization of calcium for the body. Also, the lack of magnesium is associated with the occurrence of malignant diseases. Pineapple juice reduces tension, anxiety and stress.
A latest discovery done by scientists gives hope to patients with cancer.
A group of Australian scientists announced that in the molecules of pineapple is discovered potent anticancer agent. The scientists hope their discovery will enable the development of new drugs against breast cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, ovarian cancer and against melanoma.
Scientists from the Institute for Medical Research in Queensland (Queensland Institute of Medical Research) found two molecules of bromelain (molecule -- CCZ and molecules -- CCS). Bromelain a substance derived from the loops of pineapple. Earlier studies have shown that bromelain is rich in enzymes and therefore is used in the food industry (softening of meat or getting brighter beer).
One molecule of bromelain -- CCZ stimulates the immune system and helps to identify and destroy cancer cells.
The other molecule of bromelain -- CCS blocks protein RAS, which is defective in approximately 30% of all cancers and is responsible for its occurrence.
CCS and CCZ are protease enzymes that are usually associated with the breakdown of proteins.
This is the first research that determined that these enzymes may have a specific effect on the immune system.
If results provide commenced a two-year research on the safety of this therapy are positive, the Institute will start looking for partners who would provide financial support for conducting clinical trials on humans. If clinical trials prove effective in the future there is a possibility that there could be produced new drugs from pineapple against cancer.
After verifying the healing power of the pineapple, scientific journal “Archives of Ophthalmology” published a study that recommended consummation of at least 3 servings of pineapple a day, in order to reduce the risk of senile macular degeneration that occurs in older age. Macular degeneration is a chronic disease associated with aging, which is characterized by blurred vision.
Fresh Pineapple Is Healthiest
It is recommended that the best way to consume pineapples is eating it fresh. This way, the pineapple contains the most healing properties. Most of the bromelain is lost during the canning process of pineapples.
