So Why Do Breasts Sag?
First point is that our breasts don’t have muscles. The construction consists of fat, milk-generating glands, and connective tissue. Our breasts require good care to maintain their shape. Although saggy breasts generally begin after we reach 40, they may also appear before that.
Many studies show that when women reach their late 30s, their skin starts becoming loose and shows signs of aging. The Oregon Institute of Breast Health Education states that this is case especially in those women who have undergone pregnancy.
Age and pregnancy are not the only factors involved. The others that cause sagging breasts are as following:
- Quick weight gain or weight loss
- Nutritional deficiency
- Aggressive exercise
- Wearing poor-fitting bra
There is a widespread misconception that breastfeeding contributes to sagging. But a study (conducted in 2008 and published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal) states that this is entirely false. The study found that breastfeeding is not a factor causing ptosis, the term used to refer to drooping. The fact is that the main risk factor is pregnancy. When there’s weight gain due to pregnancy, it causes stretching of ligaments. It could cause drooping afterwards. A good way to counter this problem is to maintain healthy weight gain during pregnancy.

Certain diseases such as breast cancer and respiratory conditions (tuberculosis) could also cause breast sagging. Excess intake of alcohol, nicotine, and carbonated beverages are also considered as contributing factors.

Over-Tanning & Smoking
A study conducted in 2008 showed that lighting up is a major risk in breast drooping. It is the same if you have bad lifestyle habits that break down the collagen in your skin. this includes eating foods low in nutrients or high in fat, and getting too much UV rays.
Poor-Fitting or Improper Sized Bras
When you wear a bra with wrong size, your breasts can sag faster. Even when you are not wearing a bra, the situation can be bad. Look for bras that offer special support holders/pads at the cup’s bottom. They will help in keeping the breasts in their place while preventing sagging.
Should You go Braless?
Many women are going braless and it is believed that they may just be right. This has in fact been recommended according to a recently concluded research. This study was spread across 15 years (in France). But this study didn’t take breast size into account.
It found that bras don’t offer any positives to women. in fact, they may be causing harm to your breasts over time. According to Jean-Denis Rouillon (Professor – University of Franche-Comte in Besancon), your breasts don’t get any benefits from being protected from gravity in any form – medical, anatomical or physiological.
The researcher measured and studied breasts in over 300 women (18-35 years), and examined how extra support from bras affected their body over the years. He came to the conclusion that women not wearing bras enjoyed benefits over the long time, as they developed more muscular tissue for providing natural support.
Rouillon also found that nipples achieved higher lift with regard to shoulders in women who didn’t wear bra. According to this study, it was concluded that wearing bras meant the restrictive material prevented such supportive tissue from developing, which could contribute to accelerated sagging.
This doesn’t in any way mean that you should get rid of your bras right now. The researcher also said that it may be dangerous to recommend that everyone should throw away their bras because the sample size of the study was not too large. According to Rouillon, if you have been wearing bras for long (decades), going braless may not offer you the desired benefits.
