Cranberries For Preventing Cancer Of The Colon

Did you know that cranberry extract may help prevent colon cancer through anti-inflammatory mechanism?

The oily cranberry extract and quercetin, which is major cranberry flavonoid may reduce inflammation associated with colon cancer.

Colorectal cancer is the third and the most common cancer in the U.S., according to the American Cancer Society. In the U.S. Nearly 150,000 new cases are diagnosed annually (when it comes to men-women it is almost 50-50). Researchers from Canada performed a lab study using human cells of adenocarcinoma of the colon type NT-29 that was treated with different doses of cranberry extract oil or quercetin. Expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an enzyme associated with inflammation, was measured sequentially along with other variables.

Robert Narayansingh and Robert Hurta show that cranberry extract and quercetin decreased the expression of COX 2. Furthermore, the researchers noticed a decrease in the expression of COX-2 in cells stimulated with a combination that promotes the growth of tumors. These findings are important because they demonstrate that F-kB is signaling pathways that suggest a possible link between inflammation and cancer and anti-inflammatory properties of oily cranberry extract or quercetin that can be used to modify these pathways -- researchers said.

Future studies in vivo models of colon cancer should be carried out in the near future -- they conclude.
