Thyroid disorders can be very detrimental to your weight, energy levels and overall physical health.
There are foods you should therefore avoid if you are diagnosed with or if you think you have a thyroid disorder.
These foods include the six stated below;
1. Cut Down On Your Sugar Intake
Refined sugar should be avoided if your have a thyroid disorder. Keeping your body’s blood sugar level regulated is very crucial if you have been diagnosed with autoimmune thyroid disorder.
Foods with high amounts of refined sugar can cause insulin resistance in your body as the sugar in these foods will greatly inhibit the proper functioning of your pancreas which will also lead to thyroid issues.
2. Stop Eating Fried Foods
Fried foods have a high amount of trans fats, these fats can be detrimental to the effectiveness of thyroid hormone substitution medications and they will inhibit your body’s ability to generate the thyroid hormone naturally.
3. Consume Only Moderate Amounts Of Soy
It is advisable that if you are on thyroid medications you eat only moderate amounts of soy. If you have only just taken your medication then you should eat small amounts of soy after a minimum of four hours. This is the amount of time necessary for your body to properly metabolize the chemical substances in the medication as soy will reduce your body’s ability to absorb of the medication.
The isoflavones in soy can be responsible for the reduction in thyroid functions especially for people with iodine deficiency.
4. Avoid Eating Cruciferous Veggies
If you have been diagnosed with a thyroid disorder, then it is best you avoid cruciferous vegetables. You will have to limit your broccoli consumption as these veggies can inhibit your body’s absorption of your thyroid medications.
5. Drink Less Coffee
If you consume coffee in moderation you should have no worries, but when you drink excessive coffee the caffeine in coffee can disrupt your adrenal glands function as it will release large amounts of norepinephrine and epinephrine hormones which can lead to adrenal fatigue as well as a variety of thyroid conditions.
6. Avoid Gluten Foods
Gluten foods comprise of gliadin which is a type of protein that your body dies not recognise.
It is also known that your thyroid secretes an enzyme called transglutaminase which is just like gliadin. What happens is that when gluten is eaten by you, your immune system recognises the gliadin as a threat and it attacks it, but it will also attack the enzyme your thyroid generates as well.
This attack can be so serious that it would take your thyroid about six months to recover.
